Kiwano fruit.

Being spontaneous can be a good thing..or it be a bad thing.

Tonight, it’s neither.

I don’t know how to explain why, but I’ll do my best.

This, is a Kiwano.

The horned melon, also called melano, African horned cucumber or melon, jelly melon, hedged gourd, English tomato, or kiwano, is a vine of African origin, grown for its fruit, which looks like an oval melon with horns. Native only to the region of the Kalahari desert, it is now grown in California and New Zealand.

From Wikipedia.

I found a whole bunch sitting at my local Meijer right next to the pears (one of my favorite fruits).

I figured, for eighty nine cents they can’t be all that bad.

Here’s mine before I decided to abuse the thing with a spoon:

Well, I’m sure your curious how it tastes.

The wikiHow page I found on how to prepare the strange thing said it:

Tastes like a mix of cucumber and kiwifruit.

Well, while I can testify that that’s certainly not true, I can’t exactly describe what it tastes like.

My first reaction is “This has no taste”, my second is “I’m eating flavorless semi-melted Jello from a fruit.”

Ten or so minutes later, I haven’t even made a dent in the dang thing, and I’m left questioning why I bought it. It’s by far and away the oddest thing I’ve ever eaten.. and I’ve eaten a lot of odd things.

Would I recommend it to someone? Sure, if they’re feeling spontaneous and are willing to try new things, but other wise, it’s a “Pass” on my vote.

I’m glad I tried it, but, I don’t think I’ll be buying another one.

Next up?

Carambola or, Star Fruit:

These things.

I’ll post when I get one, and post what I think of it when I abuse it with a spoon.

Until then, and until a future update.
